Wesley So is a former child prodigy. He is a Filipino chess grand master representing the United States. He relies on taking advantage of opponent's mistakes.
He became only the 11th player to break 2800 Elo. From no. 15 in 2014, he is now second in the world rankings as of March 2017 (See FIDE rankings here).

The politician's background is into publishing and mining and he has no real grasp and appreciation of the sport of chess nor its future.
In the end, So was bitterly ignored by Pichay and he was forced to undergo a 2-year hiatus depriving him of international exposure and potential financial rewards. (Read full stories (1) here, (2) here and (3) here). Real talent, however, cannot be put down by dumb politicians. He is well on his way to claim honors for the United States.
Like Wesley So, another Filipino, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, is a master tactician. He plays a highly tactical and complicated game of chess but in the political arena.
Case in point 1:
The Marvin Marcos Gambit
November 29, 2016, Police Chief Bato de la Rosa said he reinstated Supt. Marvin Marcos.
Marcos is the police CIDG chief linked to the merciless killing of Albuera Mayor Espinosa.
Bato told media that an official called him and instructed him to reinstate Marcos to his old post.
It was someone higher in rank than him and who was also his "kumpadre."
This was an incomplete story.
Sec. Ismael Sueno (DILG) and DU30 are the only persons that Bato directly report to.
Bato does not take orders from anyone else unless it originates from the two.
December 1, 2016, Sen. Leila de Lima held a press briefing. (Click here for full story)
She identified Bong Go as the "high official" one who ordered the reinstatement of Marcos.
She added that it was an open secret in the PNP that Go is the "padrino" (godfather) of Marcos.
Christopher "Bong" Go is the Special Assistant to Philippine President DU30.
Bong Go denied categorically that he knows Marcos or has even met him personally.
December 2, 2016, Bato asked de Lima to name her source and he will reveal his "kumpadre." (Click here for full story)
DU30, later in the day, finally came out to say he was the one who ordered the reinstatement.
He said that Bong Go initiated the call as per protocol but handed the phone to him.
December 3, 2016, VP Robredo received the following text message.

(Text message from Sec. Jun Evasco to Vice-President Leni Robredo) |
December 6, 2016, in a Senate hearing, Sen. Leila de Lima lambasted Bato.
She said why did Bong Go's name came up, when in fact it was DU30 who made the order.
She fell for a trap and came short of complaining to Bato that she was intentionally fed the wrong information.
Checkmate!
Addendum:
December 5, 2016, the NBI filed multiple criminal charges against Marcos and 23 others.
March 20, 2017, Baybay City Regional Trial Court Branch 14 issued an arrest warrant for 19 CIDG pesonnel including Supt. Marvin Marcos. (Click here for full story)
We cannot compel Sen. Leila de Lima to name the one who fed her the false "scoop."
All we know is that Vice-President Leni Robredo was a major casualty in the 6-day event.
It was clear, however, that Chief PNP dangled a bait because of two (2) reasons:
1. The Chief PNP would not issue a highly controversial statement that smelled of corruption and patronage politics unless there was another motive for such a statement.
2. There is no documentary proof that Robredo attended the rallies indicated. Other cabinet secretaries like Judy Taguiwalo and Liza Maza also expressed opposition to Duterte's move but they did not suffer the same fate as Robredo.
Leila de Lima took the bait of the Chief PNP- hook, line and sinker.
The official reason why Robredo was refrained from attending cabinet meetings was that she was seen joining a rally against the late dictator's burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Read full story here). Duterte said he doesn't mind Robredo expressing her opposition to the burial of the late dictator but joining actual rallies is another thing. Other cabinet members who opposed on record the dictator's burial are Judy Taguiwalo and Liza Maza but they did not suffer the same fate as Robredo.
ANOTHER QUICK DETOUR: getrealphilippines.com's "The FAILED November 25 anti-Marcos rally at the Luneta," noted that the placards and streamers used in the November 25, 2016 rally were professionally on expensive tarpaulins so someone was financing the rally "big league" as Trump love to say. The anti-Duterte forces took notice of this. rappler.com carried the November 30, 2016 live. They then came out a story showing mostly pictures of hand-made posters and streamers with the appropriate title that tried to disprove the getrealphilippines.com post, "Eye-catching Signs at the November 30 anti-Marcos rally." A pathetic case of damage-control that came too late.
Duterte's harsh and blunt action on Robredo is way beyond a normal reaction unless it involves the heart of service to the Philippine President- TRUST.
As simple as that, a leak was plugged.
--------------------oOo----------------------
Robredo ONLY attended the annual honoring of heroes on November 30, 2016 at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City, a memorial center for heroes during the martial law period and the original People Power Revolution.
Mainstream media did not dispute this fact and also a quick check with google yields negative news of Robredo joining ANTI-MARCOS BURIAL RALLIES BEFORE the events above.
By vocally opposing Duterte on the burial issue, she could just have been given a reminder, reprimand or a warning. But instructing her through text not to join future cabinet meetings of which she was a part of is too drastic a measure and is simply not commensurate to the offense.
The major anti-Marcos burial rallies happened on August 14, 2016, November 25, 2016 and November 30, 2016. Robredo was not documented to have join any of these.
